The Ghosts of The Silver Thatch Inn

June 21, 2004. My fiancé and I had plans to attend a Bed and Breakfast Seminar in Charlottesville, VA. We were throwing around the idea of running a few housekeeping cabins in a sort of Bed and Breakfast style. Since we both worked in the airline industry, we were no strangers to hotel life and customer service.

Arriving the night before gave us a chance to enjoy a nice dinner and an opportunity to stay at The Silver Thatch Inn. I believe it is an old watermelon plantation. By the time we arrived at the inn, it was late and the employees were gone for the night. Everything was dimly lit and very quiet.

Since we were the only guests with reservations that night, we showed ourselves to our room; The James Madison Room. We had quite a full, long day and fell asleep quickly.

Then it happened…You know that feeling, the one where you feel like someone is staring at you? Well, that feeling woke me up. My eyes were drawn to the foot of the bed.

A young woman and man were standing there!

Now, you know I tried to wake my fiancé up! Tried is the key word here. She looked like me and wore a white, “Little House on the Prairie” nightgown. Her blonde, medium long, wavy hair was tousled as if she had been recently sleeping.  She seemed to be my height too and had to have been between 16 to 25 years old.

The man standing next to her was much taller, at least 5’10, probably even taller than that. He looked to be in his 20’s. I had the feeling that they were siblings. Was my fiancé still sound asleep? Yes, yes he was.

The girl was holding a glass of what I assumed was water or wine. She smiled at me then poured the liquid out onto the floor! I immediately jumped out of bed. My only thought was to wipe up the wet floor but the floor was dry and they were gone.

I went back to bed, my heart pounding, my eyes wide open. I notice a glimpse of a shadow moving left to right at the front of the room. I try to sit up but feel a hand on the side of my face keeping me down. The window air conditioner then makes a thwoop, thwoop, thwoop, thwoop sound.

Seconds later, I hear the screen door slam on the Inn’s front entrance. Scared and shocked, my eyes were wide open for hours before I finally found sleep sometime after 3 a.m.

I signed the guest register on our way out, asking if this place is haunted. I never heard from them. We left before the staff arrived or I would have asked them. I called and left a message with the inn, no return call. I sent a letter to the inn inquiring, no response.

I ask the directors of the bed and breakfast seminar if The Silver Thatch Inn is haunted,  I hear;  “We don’t talk of such things.”. I have a feeling my fiancé might think I’m crazy.

Five years later…I’m watching T.A.P.S., they are ghost hunters. The episode is about ghosts who interact with tourists in Tombstone. The interaction is caught on camera, it’s called an intelligent haunting. Wait. Wait. No, really. WAIT!!! What?! I feel a flood of vindicated relief wash over me. It was real. I didn’t make it up. It wasn’t a dream.

I’m in my room. It’s a big room, wood floors, twin bed. I’m barefoot, wearing a long nightgown. I look out my window, it is a large plantation.

I go out into the hallway, my young brother and sister run to see me. I have a baby brother too. I feel they are my children in this lifetime.

I hear a commotion outside. I know the Union Soldiers are here. I have an uneasy feeling and we are terrified.

Bruce Springsteen sings…Screen door slams. Mary is dressed in white.

Those aren’t the right words to the song.

*The message in song is confirming my suspicions, the ghost was me. The same me that saw the Union Soldiers approaching.
